Enlisted in Aircrew Program in Columbus, Ohio; Boot Camp at Great Lakes, Ill. Attended three Aviation Schools at NATTC, Jax, FLA. Assigned to Fasron 14, Kobler AB, Saipan, from 12/46 -08/47. While there, volunteered to assist two ist class petty officers to construct & mann a rocket range for fleet fighter aircraft in a secured part of the island,on a plateau in Magicienne Bay. In addition to avoiding unexploded ordnance from the prior invasion of Saipan, had to be wary of incoming rockets, in their flight path, that were frequently closer to me than their strikes. As a result of our mission, contracted severe jungle rot & was hospitalized for six months: NOB Dispensary Saipan, USNH Agana,Guam, USNH Aiea Heights,Hawaii & USNH Oak Knoll, Calif. Discharged from Alameda Air Station, Calif. Looking for any Fasron 14 shipmates, especially AOMi/c Robert Nelson & AOMi/c Robert Anderson. Served under the name Martin Roland have reverted back to birth name.
