I joined the Naval Reserves one day after my 18th birthday on August 21, 1963 and was sent to Hospital Corps School that year at the H.S. Christmas break - seems like the Navy needed Corpsman in the mid-sixties! I went on active duty in July 1966 after finishing H.S. and one year of college. I reported to Charleston for assignment and was ordered to Naval Hospital NAS Pensacola to serve on general medicine ward A for 3 months; then sent to the Central Sterilization Room (CSR) for three months. I noticed that all of my fellow Corpsman were getting orders to Viet Nam and knew that mine were be just around the corner so I extended my enlistment for Aviation Medicine School there in Pensacola so I could be attached to an air squadron if I went to war. After graduation, I got orders to the dispensary at NAS Norfolk in July 1967 and did physicals on aircrew members. In July 1968 I got orders to VP45 in JAX and then the war orders arrived in December 0f '68 for the squadron to deploy to PI. Our squadron was split and 1/2 staying at Cavity City, PI and 1/2 to Utapao Thailand and I (being the senior corpsman) chose that station. Thailand was a beautiful country. I flew a5 flights as an observer to earn hostile fire pay and tax free exemption. After a few near-miss incidents, I quit flying. My EOS came in April '69 so I was sent to Treasure Island for release. I got home on April 11th, one week after my first child was born on 4/4/69.

I stayed in the reserves but after the Nam war was over, the Navy had thousands of Corpsman and making rate was very very hard. Finally, I was selected for Chief in 1985 while drilling in Tuscaloosa,AL. I retired in 1991 with 28 years. I love my Navy.
