Served March 1963 to May 1967. San Diego Boot Camp and 
assigned to the USS Hornet CVS-12, Home Port Long Beach, CA. 
She was originally named USS Kearsarge, but was renamed in 
honor of the USS Hornet (CV-8), which was lost in October 
1942, becoming the eighth ship to bear the name. I served 
over 4 years in Number 1 Fireroom. From the bilges, to Top 
Watch BT2 in Number 1 Fireroom 1963 to 1967. WESTPAC 1963-
1964 Gulf of Tonkin. 1965-1966 FAR EAST CRUISE Gulf of 
Tonkin. 1967 Gulf of Tonkin. Recovery station for the flight 
of AS-202. AS-202 (also referred to as SA-202) was the 
second unmanned, suborbital test flight of a production 
Block I Apollo Command/Service Module launched with the 
Saturn IB launch vehicle. Honorably discharged in 1967 to 
USN Reserves to 1969.
