Following commissioning in 1958, served as nuclear weapons instructor in Albuquerque, NM. Applied for and was accepted into submarine school then served on USS Spinax SS489 in San Diego. Went to SSBN Navigator's school, Dam Neck in 1964 then served on USS Patrick Henry SSBN 599. Served on Submarine Squadron 16 staff in Rota Spain 1967-1969 then ordered to USS Sea Robin SS407 as X.O. Then went to COMSUBLANT staff as force communications officer. Selected for submarine command and went through PCO school in 1972 followed by command of USS Jallao SS368. Following Jallao, ordered to command of U.S. Naval Communications Unit, London, UK. Then back to the Submarine Force in in 1976 as X.O. of USS Simon Lake AS-33. In 1978 with the likelyhood of having to drive a desk in the Pentagon and the possibiliby of ever returning to sea very slim, made the hard decision to retire and to start putting family in first priority.
