Joined up at the Philadelphia Naval Base in 1959. Completed boot
camp at Great Lakes and was assigned to the USS Northampton (CLC-l). Went from "skivvy waver" to "deck ape" and finished as a "cannon cocker,"---going through four different ship's divisions in the process.  In 1961 was assigned to the USS J. Douglas Blackwood (DE-219) as an instructor for the 4th section (recruits who had not been to boot camp).  Honorably discharged in 1965.
