I joined the U.S. Navy June 18, 1971, and completed "boot" with Company
123 in Orlando, Florida.  I was later assigned to the Public Affairs Office of the U.S
Enterprise CVAN-65.  I served there for 38-months.  I was a Journalist and
Editor of the ship's newspaper (The Ledger) and the ship's magazine (The Big E).  We were deployed to the Tonkin Gulf twice, being present for the Christmas bombing of Hanoi in 1972, the ceasefire in 1973 and the evacuation of Saigon in 1975.  We also did a yard period in Bremerton, Washington in 1973 and early 1974.  We were the first carrier to be assigned the F-14.  The "Big E" had her only real "GQ" in 1973 off the coast of Washington State when an F-14 avionics compartment had a fire resulting in about $60 million in damages.  I was 19-years-old and was the Captain's weapons phone-talker.  I was honorably discharged.
