Although Ed Reese has been retired from the United States Navy for 15 years, he has a mission in Brockport.

Reese wants every area veteran who served during the Cold War era to be recognized.

Reese's mission began two years ago when Congress voted to issue certificates of recognition to veterans who served between Sept. 2, 1945, the end of World War II,· and December 26, 1991, the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The certificates, which the Army began distributing this April on behalf of the Defense Department, are the first official recognition's for Cold War veterans.

"It is long overdue," said Reese. "In a sense, these folks won the Cold War."

Reese believes the certificates are important for posterity's sake.
"Veterans should have a certificate to hand down to their children and grandchildren," said Reese. "They deserve it."

Reese, who is eligible for the certificate because he served as a senior chief in the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1984, is committed to helping other veterans get the recognition he feels they deserve.

As a public service, Reese will prepare and submit applications for certificates on behalf of area veterans.

He has submitted about 40 applications since April and  believes he is the only veteran in the area offering such assistance. "I am trying to make it easier for people," said Reese.

One area veteran Reese helped apply for the certificate is Lew
Randall of Holley.

Randall, who served in the Navy from 1958 and 1962, feels that the recognition is important, especially for veterans who served in on-combat situations.

"To keep peace is just as important as regaining peace," said Randall. "I helped maintain that peace. "

Reese helped Randall apply in April and he expects the certificate in the mail this month.

"I'm looking forward to it," said Randall. "It makes you feel that your efforts are appreciated."

Veterans who served during the Cold War are encouraged to visit the Navy Club Office, 21 Clinton St., Brockport on Friday's between noon and 3 p.m. or call Reese at 637-0505 for an appointment.

Proof of service is required to apply. Reese suggests bringing a form DD 214 or honorable discharge certificate.
