The USS DOLPHIN, one of the first ships in the "New [old] Navy," later to be known as the great White Fleet, is nestled in "Constitution Dock" shortly after her docking on August 10, 1899. In those days, it was the practice to wire brush and clean a ship's bottom while the dock was being emptied. Men on small barges can be seen performing this work on both sides of Dolphin. This photo was taken a little over a year after the annihilation of the Spanish Asiatic squadron in Manila Bay on May 1, l898. At that time, this engagement was considered the greatest naval battle since Trafalgar.
