2. Introduction of New Members and Visitors: Cmdr. Reese stated that
this is a joint meeting between regular and associates members. For both
organizations the chairpeople will speak for their respective committee.
All associate members stood and introduced themselves. 18 members and associates
with one guest Rose Nottingham.
Shipswriter do we have a quorum: yes over 6 voting
members. Cmdr. Reese then stated that an Act of Congress in 1940
as to the only ones to vote for the Navy Club decisions to be made are
the Navy men and women...all understood that in due time they could speak.
3. Reading of the minutes from Previous Cruise: The Shipswriter (Dave
Yeaw) read the minutes from meeting of 10 March 2002. The minutes are on
file in the office for anyone who wishes to see them. Cmdr. Reese made
points of motion per acts of Congress only votes will be made by Navy Club
members. Cmdr. Reese asked for a motion to accept the minutes as read.
All in favor and carried.
4. Communication
1. Shipswriter--a letter was sent to Commandant
Jack MaGee from The Executive Staff of Ship 1812 re: National meeting notes
of 13 April 2002 in reference to Ship 1812 Auxilary. Although we realize
that the organization formerly associated with Ship 1812 is not abolished.
The body of the membership voted to disband its auxiliary. The vote was
taken at a regulary scheduled monthly meeting after due notice was
given by mail more than the required 10 days ahead of the meeting. That
notice described to have the vote and gave the reasons for that action
as required by the C&BL under the R&R p.34.
The action was duly certified in our letter
16 March 2002 to the Commandant. It was received hence your discussions
at this session. Brought up at a April mtg. The letter stated a quorum
was present and that 90% of those present voted to disband. There were
no dissenting votes.
So Commandant, everything that was done
by Ship 1812 was strictly within the word & spirit of the Nat'l Consititution
& By-Laws.
One more note Past Commander David Yeaw
when he spoke in the February mtg of the Nat'l Staff in Lafayette, Ind.
noted his wife was enrolled as auxiliary member on 2001 rolls. That was
according to both Bonnie Cabin and Carol Ollinger(Ann called them).
Ann had not in fact enrolled since 1994--all being that someone is manufacturing
membership to keep a bogus commission. We (Ship 1812) based on this evidencethat
the entire membership of that organization formerly associated with Ship
1812 is bogus.
In conclusion, body of membership of Ship
1812 has legally and conclusively voted to disband the auxiliary
formerly associated with the Ship. This action was legally carried out
and certified to the Commandant as required. We would like to thank Judge
Advocate Corbin for his help to Ship 1812 over the last several months.
He made an error in judgement in September that he has freely admitted
and has tried to rectify. Signed by Edward Reese, Commander, Navy Club
of Lake Ontario, Ship 1812, Inc.
2. Letter dated-- 25 April 2002 from Nat'l Headquarters, Las
Vegas, Nev. Subject Delegates and Alternates
Authorized--official notes from NCUSO total paid membership as of
21 April 2002 was 76 members. Your Ship is entitled to 4 Delegates and
4 Alternates as official voters during the Annual Convention in Lancaster,
Pa. being held during the 20th-22nd of June 2002. Please return to "Certification
of Delegates and Alternatives Form enclosed nolater than 28 May 2002.
The next issue of the Quarterdeck will have a revised schedule of events
and meeting times as announced by the host Ship & Squadron, which will
be delivered to your home by the first week of June. Signed by ER
Backofen, PNC Nat'l Exec. Secretary.
3. Navy Club of the USA Racine Ship 60 Inc. by an Act of Congress
1940 pretaining to Resolution #1-#5. To be passed around for members to

that their were 23 paid Associates..Al made a presentation that he had
never been in the military, but would like to ask that some the rules to
be changed so that they can stay open additional hours to help make more
money for the Navy Club. He also stated he wanted the Navy people to feel
like they can come and enjoy themselves that its not that the associates
seem to be overrunning there organization but to do things jointly make
money to pay the bills but yet enjoy what the club has to offer...they
all clapped with this speech.
Master-at-Arms Les MaGoffin (history buff) asked that he
would like to hear of some of the experiences these men and
women fought for, this is your outfit, we need your input and output for
this organization to survive.

who deserve just as much recognition as he does for the work everyone has
been doing.
The plaque is to be displayed in the ship.
The Cmdr. then announced to bring the Ship to anchor. Asked the Chaplain
to give the Two-Bell ceremony. The Master-at-Arms to ring the bell 2 rings.
A closing prayer was given.

Seabees — their simple motto tells the story: "We
build, we fight". From the island hopping of World War II and the cold
of Korea, to the jungles of Vietnam, to the mountains of Bosnia, and to
the desert of Afghanistan, the Seabees have built entire bases, bulldozed
and paved thousands of miles of roadway and airstrips, and accomplished
a myriad of construction projects.
Chief Bernard M. Bunny
1812 Commander, Ed Reese is working with Chief Bunny
and his Seabees in order to make improvements at the Navy Club. One major
project and a necessary repair, is a new roof though out the Ship. Below
is a letter and list prepared by BU1(SCW) Nate Browning through CPO Timothy
Maslyn. Anyone who can help us find donations of these items will be greatly
appreciated. The Sea Bees "can do" but we need to help by providing the
"stuff".
"Hello Mr. Reese. I got your mesage so you have the corrct
e-mail. I did some preliminary estimates for the work at the Navy
Club. As far
as the roof goes these are the numbers that I came up with.
We are looking at 30 squares of shingles; 90 sheets of plywood (if
necessary); 30 lengths of drip edge (10 ft. ea.); 10 rolls of 15# tar paper.
That is for the main bldg. For the other roofing this is what
I came up with. 2 squares of shingles plus what ever drip edge/tar
paper is
necessary. Please note that I did not include the necessary number
of roofing nails needed to complete this work. Probably 50# would
make it . The estimate for the ceiling in in the pool hall
area is as follows. we woud need 15 lenghts of wall angle @10 ft.
ea.; 24 main tees
@ 12 Ft. ea.;60 cross tees @4 ft. ea.; 70 cross tees @ 2 ft
ea. and 16 boxes of ceiling tiles assuming you are going for a 2x4 ceiling.
We
need to have an electrician come out an give an estimate on the
wiring and other accesories needed to install the lights. I am still
working
on the other estimates so I will try to give you those figures sometime
in the near future. We drill on the 15th/16th of July.
Regards,
BU1(SCW)N.Browning"

W&R Room-Within the last two months a new deck has been installed in
the bar area. He had 12 volunteers here to strip out
the old and put the new with an 1812 logo placed in the
center (by Reese). Also, the upper deck was cleared out and trash removed
via a dump truck.
A used cooler was purchased from the Village Pantry for $100 cash and a
$500 tax deduction.
It has been installed. The game plan is to have a new ceiling put
in the bar with materials
donated by Brockport Police Dept. A drainage system needs to be installed
for the cooler in bar.
The 3-well sink needs to be completed. A new back bar cabinet is to be
installed from material
donated by the Brockport Fire Dept.
1Parking-The
front area in parking lot will be blacktopped with a handicapped ramp included,
courtesy of the Village of Brockport via Mayor Matela. The Canal Side bar
has agreed to allow
NCLO the use of 6 parking spaces in their parking lot. These will
be clearly marked. Stickers will
be made available to the members so that our cars will not be towed. The
handicapped spot on
the side of the bldg. will once again be properly marked.
2Upkeep-The
broken fence on the back property line needs to be torn down. The inside
of the
ships quarters needs painting.

of the Associate Membership Committee:
0She
has asked Bruce Catherwood and Tina Sander to assist behind the bar as
necessary. Also Lin
Breunig will be helping in the kitchen and cleaning the heads on
a weekly basis.
1She
reported that the rental machines brought in $520 in the last 2 wks. This
is shared 50/50 with
NCLO. We net $260.
Lew Randall, Veterans' Chairperson:
Lew discussed the need for a delegate to the
Batavia VAMC. We are entitled to one representative and
one alternate. The will have to attend
to four meetings per year, help with a clothing drive, etc. These
delegates get to go to the annual training session
held by the VAVS. The Commander will seek someone
to fill those slots.
Stu Dube as liaison to the BVAC:
Coffee and donuts will be served at the vets club at
0800 prior to Memorial Day parade.
10. Unfinished Business:
The letter from Roxanne brought many questions. Dube
brought up several issues:
0He reiterated that the
auxiliary has a bogus membership. Just who are these members she claims
in the letter.
1Roxanne stated that
their records and letters were made available, but never to NCLO. Requests
date back to 1999.
2A list of their officers,
election results, and their membership was also never provided.
3The original auxilary
application approved doesn't match the organization that National floated.
4Many prevarications
were sent to NCUSA damaging the creditability of NCLO and specific members.
5Her ramblings just don't
add up: Something about the kitchen was never completed and that
the women were never allowed to perform any duties to help the men
out. The building was not handicap accessible for her members to gain entrance
to their meetings.
6Were we to accept the
auxiliary back, how could we be sure that two to three months down the
road they wouldn't pull the same crap.
7As Judge Advocate, Dube
recommended a vote of cofidence, verifying the vote of the previous
session to disband the auxiliary and consider the auxiliary to be a dead
issue. He states that as a
motion. 2nded by
Lew Randall. Nine votes aye; one vote nay.. Carried
11. New Business:
0Yeaw brought
up the idea to purchase an ad in the NCUSA Newsletter, The Quarterdeck
for another year. Randall made the motion. 2nded by Yeaw. Carried.
1Dr. Dube
recapped the events taking place at the Squadron meeting last Saturday
pertaining to the activities of PNC Sankel. He noted that Sankel
refused to support Yeaw as his shipmate
for Squadron Commander and Sankel had the swinging vote electing David
Kraus instead. Dube moved that Ship 1812 go on record that Squadron
Jr. Exec.. Officer David Sanko doesn't represent Ship 1812 nor is he a
delegate of this Ship, and that his title PNC will no longer carry and
infleunce in our organization. 2nd by Randall. Carried.
2Randall asked
the whereabouts of a backpack he got from Batavia VAMC during our
trip to see Chief Michael Shaner. It had been turned over to
Ayrault to distribute or raffle off.
12. For the Good of the Ship:
Jr. Exec. Officer Dan
Sell brought up the idea of a gun raffle to raise some funds for the organization.
A suggested price of $5 per ticket with no more than 500 tickets to be
purchased for a quality gun. A
discussion followed with
the cost being rather high, so Yeaw suggested he will help in the organization
with this raffle to be conducted in September of this year.
The $31 50/50 raffle
winner was Dan Sell. He wins $15. The Ship gets $16.
The Commander announced
that there was a small dinner available for $2 in the W&R Room.
The Commander brought the Ship to anchor at 2015 hours.
The Commander then announced:
"If there be no objections, we will now bring
the ship to anchor."
With three raps of the gavel, the members are brought to their feet
and the Commander will ask:
"Will the Chaplain give the
Two-Bell Ceremony."
Two Bell Ceremony
The Master-At-Arms slowly tolls the Ship's bell while the
Chaplain says: (Lew Randall)
"The toll of the Ship's bell reminds us of the reverance we owe our
departed shipmates and to those who guard our honor upon the sea and foreign
soil. Let it be a reminder of the faith they confide in us. Let us who
gather here not forget our obligations and in silence breathe a prayer
for our asent shipmates."
After a few moments interval of silence, the Commander whill then
ask the Chaplain:
"The Chaplain will now recite the closing prayer."
The Chaplain acknowledging the direction, will say: (Dan Sell)
"Almighty God, who has given us the Grace at this time, with one
accord tomake our supplications unto Thee, and dost promise that when two
or more are gathered together in Thy name, Thou will grant their requests,
fulfill them now, Oh Lord, the desires and petitions of the servants, as
may be most expedient for them, granting us in this world, knowledge of
Thy truth, and in the world to come, life everlasting. AMEN."
The Commander then shall order:
The color guard will retire the colora and shipmates will stand."
after retiring the colors, the Commander will say:
"Let us leave this cruise fully aware of the obligations we owe to
our Community and our Navy Club. The next cruise of the Navy Club of Lake
Ontario will be at : our ship,

several programs. The brochure will be left out for
perusal.
► VAVS will be holding a “Pie & Plant” benefit

►Sandra Hare, widow of the late retired
Brockport police Chief, Don Hare, donated $50 to the
Friends of Ed Freson.
►The monthly report from NCUSA was made
available to any that wished to see it.
►A note from the former daughter-in-law of
Shipmate Frank Breunig tells us that she thinks Frank
may be in a nursing facility somewhere, and he may be
suffering from Alzheimer’s. We have been unable to
locate him.
Reading of the Bills/Report of Financial Activity:
►No outstanding bills.
►Reese handed out copies of a detailed financial
report that outlined income, bills paid, and all
purchased made. He clarified some of the numbers
(particularly deposit figures) for a few members.
No update has been made
since the last report, so the

The Checking stands at $1022.95.
►An official accounting of the Ship’s 2001
financial activities was made by our contracted

a card.
►The sister of Shipmate Ollie Jenks passed away.
Ayrault sent a card.
Committees:
None.
Unfinished Business:
None.
New Business:
►The NY Squadron meeting, recently held at Ship
1812, was discussed. Several items discussed were
strictly Ship 1812 business, not open to Squadron
consideration. During that meeting, Gunny Leonard
pointed that fact out adamantly.
The Squadron Commander read from what he was led to
believe was a copy of the Squadron By-laws. It stated
that absentee balloting was prohibited in NY Squadron.
Following that meeting, Reese dug out the original
proposed NY Squadron By-laws approved by the (then)
Squadron Staff. There was no such statement about
balloting. Yeaw then called the NCUSA National
Executive Secretary to ask if NY Squadron By-laws were
ever approved by NCUSA. He was told that none were
ever submitted, so NY Squadron has no by-laws. We
will be having absentee ballots.

Dubé moved to close the nominations. Miller 2nded.
Carried.
Elections will be held on 13 March, with the
installation of officers to take place at the annual
gala Commissioning Dinner and Dance on Saturday, 16
March.
►Yeaw announced the quarterly meeting of the
National Staff to be held on 16 February in Lafayette,
IN.
Good of the Ship:
►Ayrault reported on his trip to Batavia VAMC to
award the life membership in NCLO to Chief Michael
Shaner, the victim of encephalitis during active duty.
The Chief’s parents, wife, and daughter were present
for the ceremony. The local newspaper had a reporter
there. NCLO Shipmates attending were Ron Ayrault, Ed
Reese, Lew Randall, Jim Conley, Dick Griswold, and
Dave Yeaw. Griswold awarded Chief Shaner an engraved
copy of the Chiefs’ Creed
►Reese handed out sheets with the most often
used VA toll-free numbers.
►The Friends of Eddie Freson met at the Ship on
19 January. Varied community members, representing
several other charitable and veterans’ organizations,
attended the meeting. The lead detective from Genesee
County enlightened the attendees as to details of
Eddie’s demise and answered most questions surrounding
those circumstances. The next meeting is slated for
23 February.
► Dubé reported that the Brockport Memorial Day
Parade will be held on Saturday, 25 May.
►Because there were a few newly signed members
present, Ayrault talked about our involvement with the
grade schools on Veterans’ Day.
►Reese introduced the 5 x 7 framed photo chosen
for Commander Yeaw’s contribution. It was taken
during our Pearl Harbor commemoration ceremony and
will be displayed in the Museum.
►Murphy pointed out that those with certain unit
citations may be eligible for the Navy Combat Ribbon.
He would be glad to advise anyone as to how he
obtained his.
►Commander Yeaw called up Shipmate Ayrault and
read the Certificate of Citation from the New York
State Assembly recognizing Ron Ayrault as an
outstanding citizen of both community and state and
worthy of great esteem. The certificate is signed by
Assemblyman Charles Nesbitt.
The Commander invited all to partake in some roast
beef sandwiches for “soup call”
The Ship was brought to anchor at 2008.

Reading of the Minutes from the Previous Meeting:
Reese pointed out that everyone had received a copy of
the minutes by US Mail within the last two weeks.
Murphy moved to dispense with the reading. 2nd by
Dubé. Carried.
Communications:
1. The Brockport Firemen’s Exempt announces its
annual bowling tournament. Details are made available
for anyone wishing to form a team and participate.
2. The Orleans Joint Veterans’ Council announces the
results of its raffle to raise money for transport
vans they use to help veterans and family members to
get to the VA Hospital. They solicit donations fron
area veteran organizations.
Reading of the Bills/Report of Financial Activity:
Reese reports that all the bills are paid. Details of
the activity on the accounts were passed out on
separate sheets to those present. The savings balance
was (Money Market Account) $5,615.59 and the checking
balance was $ 590.11.
Conley moved t accept the report. 2nd by Ayrault.
Scott asks for clarification on deposits, the monthly
rent check, WAR Room expenditures/income. Reese
explained several points and assured that very
detailed daily figures are available to any member.
The motion was carried.
Beach Patrol:
Renewals stand at 60 (out of last year’s 86). The
associate membership has about a 1/3 renewal so far.
Reese passes out the new business card sized
recruiting cards to each member. These are designed
to hand out to anyone potentially interested in the
club as a tangible reminder to stop in. It has room
for our member’s name on the front and an application
on the back. Any card returned to the ship is good
for a refreshing beverage from the WAR Room.
Ayrault and Murphy have a potential member that
wishes to attend a meeting before he joins. They are
encouraged to bring him around.
Murphy pointed out that his Legion post offers a year
of free membership to new recruits and suggested that
we might try that. The Commander agreed that it might
be worth a try, but would rather allow the incoming
administration make that call instead of saddling them
with a lame duck spending decision.
Sick Bay:
Bill Wells’ Step mother passed away. Associate member
Lucky Burley’s Mother passed away. Cards were sent to
each by Chaplain Ayrault on behalf of the Ship.
Ayrault needs cards. Yeaw will ask Pratt to order
some if he can contact him (perhaps at the upcoming
Squadron meeting next Saturday).
Committees:
Chaplain Ayrault is spearheading the presentation of
life membership to Chief Michael Shaner at the Batavia
VAMC. He will coordinate with the VA and the family
for some date in the next week or so. We will be
presenting a laminated card and a certificate (the
permanent metal cards will be ordered and one will be
presented later). Griswold offers to donate an
engraved copy of the Chief’s Creed for presentation.
>From those at the meeting, Yeaw, Reese, Ayrault,
Conley, Scott, and Griswold wished to participate.
Unfinished Business:
1. Members were reminded that nominations
are being
accepted by Dubé and his committee. Nominations from
the floor will be accepted at the February meeting and
ballots will be sent out for absentee voting.
Elections will be held on 13 March and the new slate
of officers will be sworn in at the annual
Commissioning dinner on 16 March.
2. The December meeting minutes detailed
the vote to
relieve two recalcitrant Staff officers of duties.
Sankel questioned whether anyone had as yet spoken to
the National Judge Advocate on the legality of that
vote. Yeaw stated he had tried to call several times
but Corbin was as yet unavailable.
3. The issue of voting to disband
the Auxiliary was
broached, but before any discussion took place, Dubé
moved that the action be tabled until it could be
further researched. 2nd by Murphy. Carried
4. The proposed change in the Ship
1812 By-laws
involving associate membership will be on the ballot
for the upcoming election. If voted in, the change
will be presented to National in June.
.
New Business:
No new business.
Good of the Ship:
1. A group to be called “The Friends
of Eddie Freson”
has been formed. An anonymous benefactor has donated
$1250 to try to generate leads in solving his death.
Of that amount, $1000 is designated as reward money;
$250 is set aside for expenses in generating renewed
interest. To that avail, a meeting has been set up
for noon on 19 January to meet with Genesee County
investigators and offers an opportunity to clear up
rumors surrounding that case. Anyone interested has
been invited to attend. Reese passed out fliers for
those present to get posted anywhere that will allow
them.
2. Reese pointed out that Marguerite,
our official
Ship’s Photographer, performs that service gratis.
All she asks is that if anyone would like reprints,
she will make them available for a modest fee,
depending on print size. Several proofs from our
Pearl Harbor commemoration were passed around. Yeaw
gave $5 for the Ship to pick some prints for a
montage.
3. Yeaw pointed out that following
the meeting there
will be a marvelous pronghorn antelope stew for any
that wish to partake.
The Ship was brought to anchor at 2000 hrs.

Because the Shipswriter just made it to the meeting
from a business trip, the minutes of the November
meeting were not available. He assured the assemblage
that the minutes would be on the website by Friday and
would be published in a newsletter to be mailed within
two weeks.
Communications:
Several Newsletters from other Ship. These are
available on the table in the meeting room.
Reading of the Bills/Report of Financial Activity:
Reese reports that all the bills are paid. Details of
the activity on the accounts were passed out on
separate sheets to those present. The savings balance
was $5,604.63 and the checking balance was $1,249.46
Beach Patrol:
Renewals stand at 51.
Sick Bay:
No report.
Committees:
Events – the Pearl Harbor Commemoration was a great
success. We thank Dan Labarge and John Lefferts for
coordinating the Honor Guard from the Holley VFW.
Mayor Jo Matella took time from her busy schedule to
attend. Great job and kudos to Ron Ayrault for making
it all come together.
Unfinished Business:
The schedule for the election process was confirmed.
.
New Business:
It was noted that some of the Ship’s Officers have
failed to make several meetings without excuse. The
Ship’s By-Laws provide for the removal of derelict
officers by a majority vote of the Executive staff,
but the Catch-22 is that these are the Executive Staff
and if they don’t show, we can’t get a majority to
vote. Indeed, our Senior Executive Officer moved to
California, but refuses to step down. In frustration,
the body made a motion that Sr. Exec. Ben Burne and
Staff member Charles Vandertang be stripped of office
for continued absence. The body voted unanimously to
remove. The commander will check with the National
Judge Advocate on the legality of such a vote. If it
is deemed legitimate, these officers will be removed
from office.
The Ship 1812 By-Laws, Article XIV, discusses
“Honorary Membership”. Since NCUSA recognizes
“Associate Members” and don’t want “Honorary”, it was
moved to reword that Article. The proposed changed
Article will read:
“As defined, Associate Membership in Navy Club of Lake
Ontario, Ship 1812, Inc. is available to one not
qualified by service for regular membership. Such
applicants must be found acceptable by the
Investigating Committee to be Members of Ship 1812.
The dues for Associate members will be the same as for
regular membership. If the Associate wishes to
receive the NCUSA newsletter, Quarterdeck, he/she will
be charged an extra $2 per annum. In application for
Associate Membership, the prospective member will be
asked to describe any military service experience, or
the close relationship to someone with such service.
This is not a requirement of membership, but dictated
by adherence to Federal Tax Exemption laws.”
A vote on this change will be held in February and
submitted to NCUSA at least 60 days prior to the
National Convention.
The issue of the Auxiliary of Ship 1812 was brought
up. From the By-Laws of NCUSA, the following was
quoted in part from page 34 under the heading
Jurisdiction of Clubs: “Each Auxiliary shall be
governed by and under the control of the Club whose
number it bears.” In May of this year, the Commander
of the Auxiliary was asked (in writing) for an
accounting of her membership and meetings. This was
not forthcoming. Indeed, she saw fit to take our Ship
to task with the National Judge Advocate, in September
with wholly unfounded and false charges. Therefore,
the body determined that, since Auxiliary has no
membership and holds no meetings, it is of no value to
the Ship, and, in light of the activities of the past
year, has been shown to be a detriment to the Ship.
NCUSA By-Laws, page 34 under Discontinuance reads:
“A Club may, by vote of 80% of the membership present
at a Club meeting following a printed or written
notice, mailed or delivered to each member in good
standing at least ten days before said meeting, vote
to disband its Auxiliary; such notice to show
contemplated action and the reason thereof [sic].”
At the regular meeting on 9 January, such a vote will
be taken.
Good of the Ship:
A ceremony honoring veterans was held at the Middle
School in Brockport. Ship 1812 was represented by,
among others, Dan Sell and Ron Ayrault.
Reese announced a work party to muster at the Ship at
0800 on 16 December.
Norma Share, President of the Associate Membership,
provided chili for the meeting attendees.
The Ship was brought to anchor at 2000.
Meeting of 13 November 2001
The Commander opened the meeting at 1905. GSGT
Leonard acted as Master-at-Arms. The usual ritual was
followed.

Communications:
E-mail was received from Shipmate William Jones from
Ohio inquiring into life membership. He enjoys our
website and wants to be a part of an active
organization such as ours.
The Village of Brockport invites us to participate in
their annual Mardi Gras festival.
Reading of the Bills/Report of Financial Activity:
Reese reports that all the bills are paid. A sheet
outlining the activity on the savings and checking
accounts was passed around. The savings balance was
$5577.47. The checking balance was $838.97
These reports were accepted as presented.
Beach Patrol:
Reese reports that we have 49 renewals to date (there
were 88 members in 2001). NCUSA has sent out only one
notice so far.
Ayrault asks if we still advertise for members. The
answer was “not per se”. However, we are continually
in the local news for our activities –
ceremonies/commemorative rites, free dinners for the
needy, etc.
Sick Bay:
Reese took the flag that Dolly Montgomery knitted for
us to a memorial in her honor at the Spencerport
Legion Post.
Committees:
Events – A commemoration of the attack on Pearl Harbor
will be held at 1300 hours on 7 December on the
grinder in front of the ship. Ayrault will coordinate
the participation of the Holley VFW. Yeaw will advise
the constabulary and the Mayor’s office.
Ayrault reports that his efforts to find information
on this year’s ROY dinner for the Buffalo NRD have
been futile. He and Griswold will follow up.
Unfinished Business:
None
New Business:
The schedule for 2002 elections was decided. The
timeline is as follows:
12 December – The Nominating Committee will be
officially charged. It will be chaired by Dr. Stu
Dubé. Ayrault, Murphy, Kamp, and Griswold volunteered
to help.
Those interested in running for office are encouraged
to submit a (very) brief bio to Stu’s attention at the
Ship. The posts are:

walk-ins must be paid up by 28 February and on the
Ships Roster.
16 March – The night of our gala Commissioning
Commemoration and Installation of new officers. Bring
the family. Dinner and entertainment are planned.
Good of the Ship:
Scott asked about the clothing drive – specifically
where the clothing was going, since we were soliciting
children’s and women’s clothing as well. He was
assured that they were still destined for the
Canandaigua VA. The VA helps out needy Vets and their
families.
Reese reported on a visit by Ship 1812 to the Batavia
VA. We encountered Chief Michael Shaner, who had
contracted encephalitis aboard the USS North Carolins.
As a consequence, he is severely handicapped. Reese
moved that the Ship nominate him as a member and pay
his dues. Dubé 2nded. Murphy amended the motion
to
read that he will be a Ship 1812 Life Member. Reese
and Dubé agreed to the amendment. Passed.
Seaward asked if the Ship was involved in the aid
trips to WTC. Reese described the involvement of the
New York Naval militia, several of which are Ship 1812
members.
The Ship was brought to anchor at 2000.

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL
ALONE
IN A ONE-BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE.
I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE
AND TO SEE JUST WHO> IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.
I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE:
NO TINSEL; NO PRESENTS; NOT EVEN A TREE;
NO STOCKING BY MANTLE; JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH
SAND;
AND ON THE WALL, PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.
WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBERING THOUGHT CAME TO MY MIND.
FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, SO DARK AND SO
DREARY -
THE HOME OF A SOLDIER; NOW I COULD SEE CLEARLY.
THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE.
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE-BEDROOM HOME.
THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER;
NOT HOW I PICTURED A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.
WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED?
I REALIZED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE
WILLING TO FIGHT.
SOON ‘ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY
AND PARENTS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS
DAY.
THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.
I COULDN'T HELP WONDER HOW MANY LAY ALONE
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME?
THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE.
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY.
THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
"SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE.
"I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM; I DON'T ASK FOR MORE;
MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS."
THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP.
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT; I CONTINUED TO WEEP.
I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL,
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED FROM THE COLD EVENING'S
CHILL.
I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE, ON THAT COLD, DARK NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR, SO WILLING TO FIGHT.
THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT
AND PURE,
WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA, IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY,
ALL’S SECURE."
ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
"MERRY CHRISTMAS, MY FRIEND, AND TO ALL A GOOD
NIGHT."

2 November 2001, while visiting the patients wards at the Veteran's
Medical Center in Batavia, NY, Dave Yeaw and Ed Reese had the honor of
meeting Mike Shaner. Mike contracted a neurological disease (encephalitis)
along with a number of his shipmates aboard the USS South Carolina. Although
his shipmates lost their battle to that disease, Mike held on. He has severe
brain damage. The fight has been long and hard. His smiles and his few
brief words indicated his appreciation of the visit. We at ship 1812 wish
him all the best and encourage other members to visit Mike. This is what
Navy Club of Lake Ontario is all about. "shipmates helping shipmates".
